When Aruba was first inhabited by settlers, they brought donkeys with them to assist with work and transportation. As society developed on Aruba, the donkeys were no longer needed, but still existed on the island. To prevent the donkey population from becoming a nuisance, a Donkey Sanctuary was created to provide a safe and comfortable location for donkeys to live. This Sanctuary is open to the public and is a popular place for visitors to the island.
